Carrizal Bajo Church, Atacama Chile

During the years 1850-1900, this city was one of the most important ports in Chile, it had a hospital, theater and church for a population of 8,000 inhabitants until then.

The second railway (after the Caldera-Copiapó) was installed here in 1864, linking it with nearby towns and mining sectors, such as Canto del Agua and Carrizal Alto.

Around 1878, its copper production was 3,614,872 kg, one of the best annual productions. After the year 1900, the town lost population, mining declined, Carrizal Alto disappeared and the railway was closed in 1961.

Currently it is a cove of artisanal fishermen with a sparse population.
